Hebrew and Chinese Leap Month Comparison

Hebrew and Chinese calendars both use leap months to answer lunar debt, but one is visibly arithmetic while the other is tied to solar-term rules.

Both calendar systems are lunisolar: lunar months matter, but the calendar also has to stay connected to the solar year. The interesting difference is how each system decides when to add a month.

A lunar year is too short for a seasonal solar year. Hebrew and Chinese calendar systems both respond with leap months, but they do not use the same rulebook. The Hebrew calendar uses a structured 19-year Metonic cycle; the Chinese calendar depends on solar terms and lunation structure.

Why seven in nineteen appears

Nineteen solar years are close to 235 lunar months. Since 19 ordinary lunar years contain 228 months, a lunisolar calendar often needs 7 extra months across a 19-year span to keep months near seasonal anchors.
