The Julian rule adds too many leap days over long spans. The Gregorian rule removes three century leap days every 400 years, so the civil calendar stays much closer to the tropical year.

Method
Gregorian dates use a 400-year leap cycle
The tool uses local-noon JavaScript Date objects for civil date arithmetic, then applies the Gregorian leap-year rule directly: years divisible by 4 are leap years, except century years unless divisible by 400.
400-year cycle
Every 400 Gregorian years contain 146,097 days, exactly 20,871 seven-day weeks, so weekday patterns repeat over the full cycle.
