Assumptions used

What this answer assumes

Exact for the published 2024-25 ATO threshold table. Years-to-repay is an approximation that excludes annual CPI indexation β€” actual repayment period will be longer in most years.

  • Rates reflect the 2024-25 ATO HELP repayment income thresholds.
  • HELP debt is indexed to CPI on 1 June each year. This calculator does not model future indexation β€” years-to-repay is an estimate only.
  • Repayment income includes taxable income plus reportable fringe benefits plus total net investment loss β€” it is not the same as your salary or gross income.
  • Voluntary repayments are not modelled. They reduce the debt immediately without bonus (the 5% bonus was removed from 1 January 2022).
  • The calculator covers HECS-HELP, FEE-HELP, OS-HELP and SA-HELP under the unified HELP scheme.

Master’s Tip

How to use the result well

Master's Tip: your employer withholds HELP repayments through the tax system based on your income. Print the repayment income (not salary), repayment rate and annual amount for your own records and to check against your PAYG withholding variation.

Fortnightly = annual Γ· 26. Weekly = annual Γ· 52. Years to repay = debt Γ· annual repayment (assuming no indexation).

Worked example

For $75,000 repayment income: falls in the $74,856–$79,347 band at 3.5%. Annual repayment = $75,000 Γ— 3.5% = $2,625. Fortnightly = $101.00. Weekly = $50.48. With a $28,000 debt and no indexation, estimated years to repay β‰ˆ 10.7 years.

Assumptions and limitations

Trust boundary

What this calculator does NOT do

  • VSL (Vocational Student Loans) β€” separate threshold tables apply
  • New Zealand citizens living in Australia β€” different HELP rules apply
  • Calculating exact tax withholding β€” use the ATO's tax withheld calculator for PAYG purposes
  • Confirming your actual HELP debt balance β€” use myGov ATO online services

When to stop using this calculator

  • If your HELP debt is over $100,000 β€” consider a voluntary repayment strategy with your tax agent before the June indexation date
  • If you have multiple HELP loan types β€” verify the combined balance in myGov rather than estimating

Questions

What is the 2024-25 HECS repayment threshold?

$54,435. No compulsory repayment is required if your repayment income is below this amount.

What is "repayment income"?

Repayment income is your taxable income plus reportable fringe benefits plus total net investment loss. It is not simply your salary. Check your notice of assessment or myTax for the exact figure.

Does HECS debt get indexed?

Yes. HELP debt is indexed to CPI on 1 June each year. In 2023 the indexation rate was 7.1%. This calculator does not model future indexation.

Can I make voluntary repayments?

Yes, through ATO online services. Voluntary repayments reduce your debt immediately. The 5% bonus for voluntary repayments was removed from 1 January 2022.

Is HECS-HELP the same as FEE-HELP?

They are different loan types but both sit under the HELP scheme and use the same repayment threshold table. HECS-HELP is for Commonwealth-supported places; FEE-HELP is for full-fee domestic students.
